From Zimbabwe, this stone sculpture is of a Ndebele Chieftain Head. The Northern Ndebele people are a Nguni ethnic group native to Southern Africa. Significant populations of native speakers of the Northern Ndebele language (siNdebele) are found in Zimbabwe and in South Africa.
The sculpture is etched (signed) on the reverse by Joel Mango and measures approximately 9.75” h x 4” w x 6.5” d and weighs 7.6 lbs
The composition of the stone is unknown but is possibly Picture Jasper which is readily available in Africa as well as deposits found in several locations around the world, including the USA, China, Venezuela each with its own distinct characteristics.
